How to create a map using a "state" field from dataset?

I have downloaded a .qvd dataset that has city and state columns in it, however, QS does not recognize the columns as a mapping feature.  When I try to create a map, there are no dimensions available to choose from.  How do I resolve?

I have loaded QVD data using the data load editor.  The dataset has a column for City and a column for State (in the US).  I assumed that QS would automatically recognize these columns as geo/map fields.  However, when I try to add a map to my sheet and select a dimension, I don't have any fields that I can select from.  Essentially, QS does not recognize "city" and "state" fields automatically.  Apparently, I have to tell QS that these are geo/mapping fields, but I don't know how.
