Upgrade

Hi

I am planning to upgrade my qliksense from May 2021 May 2023 so need to confirm few below things:

1) Do I need to stop all the services before upgrading it or need to exclude any specific service to keep it running during whole upgrade process.

2) Can I directly upgrade from may 2021 to Aug 23 or I need to first upgrade to any between version?

Any additional precausions to be taken please spe

Kindly assist.

Regards,

Mahamed

Hi @Mahamed_Qlik

great that you have gone through documentation.

  • Procedure applies to both - single and multi node environments as you need to run upgrades on all nodes.
  • Stop Qlik Sense services means all of them. It is not explicit as in "stop Engine Service... or Scheduler service...". It says stop Qlik Sense services..
  • Installer by default will stop services anyway so that step is just a good practice.

Hi,

how about reading documentation on the subject: https://help.qlik.com/en-US/sense-admin/May2023/Subsystems/DeployAdministerQSE/Content/Sense_DeployA...

it is all very well described there

Hi Lech,

Thank you for sharing but I have already gone through it and I found some of the information is still showcasing with respective to older versions so need to clarify here as this is latest version.

For example -

1) Do I need to stop all the services before upgrading it or need to exclude any specific service to keep it running during whole upgrade process  For this point there is no specific information related to upgrading on single node, but available for multinode and it is showing to stop the services and did not specify all of few of them

2) Can I directly upgrade from may 2021 to Aug 23 or I need to first upgrade to any between version?
There is very old diagram available

Hi @Lech_Miszkiewicz

Just saw your response, crossread the existing documentation and saw the higlighted mention

Nyharindra_0-1694786431532.png

Does it mean that we should stop all Qlik Sense services except the repository database? am a bit confused when the procedure says all services.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi @Nyharindra

where did you find this?

is it from https://help.qlik.com and for which version?

it is important to know that instructions can change between version which is why you want to use official help page for any reference.

Hi @Lech_Miszkiewicz

Yes it is coming from qlik help portal Upgrade Qlik sense Windows May 2023

Especially for us : we are planning to upgrade from Feb 23 to May 23 version

Thanks in advance

Hi @Nyharindra

1. Steps where helps site talks about services are labeled "BEFORE" you upgrade. There you normally take backup of repository which should be done with all services stopped apart from Repository DB service

2. The actual upgrade installer stops services as required by itself when running upgrade procedure so you dont have to worry about it

3. Regarding the versions jump - it may depend on your Postgres DB version and whether you will be able to run the same version. Since the jump from Feb 23 to Aug 23 is rather small you should be fine

Hi @Lech_Miszkiewicz

An experience feedback from my side (and may be will help someone). Did the patch uninstall + upgarde  Qlik Sense to May 2023 version today on our prod env successfully

To uninstall patches

  1. Do a backup of the system before any actions
  2. Stop all Qlik Sense services except Postgresql (to note that we are with unbundled Pgsql 14 now)
  3. Change the services to manual start
  4. Control Panel > program and features > click on the left side "View installed updates" > find any Qlik's patch > select and uninstall
  5. Reboot the machine once uninstall successful (not mandatory but to be sure for a cleaner sys, I did it)
  6. After reboot > Go to services and change back the Qlik Sense services (previously set to manual) start to Automatic(delay start).
  7. Start services if you do not need to upgrade

In case you need To do an Upgrade

  1. Do a backup of the system before any actions
  2. Stop all Qlik Sense services except Postgresql (to note that we are with unbundled Pgsql 14 now)
    • Postgresql should be kept up and running to let the upgrade process identify that an existing repository already exist
    • Postgresql contains the migration hist of your Qlik objects and services (otherwise on first launch of install you will get message that repository is missing)
  3. Launch the Qlik_sense_setup.exe
  4. Follow the process and provide the system account password and postgres password when needed
  5. Wait for the process to finish untill you get the successful upgarde message
  6. Crosscheck your Qlik sense app and streams are fully functionnal
