Variable Input

Hello everyone, I was wondering if everyone that reads this post can reply with links to videos or sites or just their own knowledge about variable input.

I'm trying to understand how to use the variable input object with the buttons or drop down options (preferably buttons).  I don't know where to start - I'm not sure what Qlik's restrictions and rules are for creating a variable. 

Any explanation would help.Thank you
