Moving licenses

Hi everyone,

I've got a problem that I'm hoping can be solved a lot easier than what I'm currently planning to do.

My company will soon be restructuring its Qlikview folder structure. All files will stay on the same server, but the applications need to be moved to a different folder. In order to keep downtime to a minimum for our users, we want to keep the old version of every application running until the new one works.

Now here's the problem. We need to move licenses over to the applications in the new structure. However, our company only has a limited amount of leftover licenses, meaning that in order to ensure that no one ends up losing access to applications that they need, we need to puzzle out how to move licenses while working around the quarantine periods (which I believe can be up to 1 week in QV12).

So instead of doing all that, I wonder if, since the applications stay on the same server and will be nearly identical to the old applications, it would be possible to move the licenses over without having to deal with the quarantine period. For the record, I'm not trying to make 1 license work for 2 applications, I essentially want 1 license to work for the same application but in a different location.

If anyone could provide any help with this, it could save us a lot of time and it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

QlikView Document CALs (which I assume this is about), are tied to the path and document name.

So, for example: \mount1\name.qvw

If that changes, the CAL needs to be removed and re-added to the new document.

To work around this, it may be possible for you to obtain a temporary extension of the amount of CALs you have in your license, or have Session CALs added while you are working on redoing the folder structure. You'd need to use the Update LEF function in the license tab to update the LEF twice, once to extend it, once to restrict it again. This is a discussion that you'd need to have with your Account Team at Qlik.

Depending on how many documents you have to work with, you may also want to look into option 3 and 4 in this article

Hi Sonja,

Thank you for your reply. We had already started migrating our structure by the time I saw your comment, but I will still mark your comment as the correct answer in case other people need help in the future.

In case you or anyone else is interested, we just ended up moving the CALs manually using our ~40 floating licenses, avoiding downtime for most people except those who hadn't used their CALs in over 2 weeks. Ended up working out just fine 🙂
