How to create multiple variables in columns

I am trying to create multiple variables with two columns, with them both having an overarching variable. I.e. State as a merged cell above the two columns, and units and volume being the two variables beneath them. I can do State plus Units or State plus Volume easily enough as variables however I'd like to be able to use State as a variable and also units as it's own variable in order to compare across states etc. Hopefully this makes sense, looking forward to some responses! Thanks in advance.

Where exactly do you want to create this? And why do you want to use "Variables"?

In the QV User Interface, and with appropriately tagged data, you just create a pivot table with two expressions: Units and Volume. Add a dimension State and move it from a display position on the left (horizontal) to the top above the expression columns. Each State value will display two expressions.

The issue is that I'm not sure how to create the 'Units' and 'Volume' variables when they are read in via each State, so they file cannot identify the Units as a whole and Volume as a whole without it's State attachment. Hopefully that makes sense...

I am not entirely sure that I understand your issue. It would help a lot if you could post a sample of your source data, or a screenshot of your data model if you already managed to load the data into QlikView.

Remember that it is perfectly possible for your data model to provide only separate state-units and state-volume combinations, but in the UI where aggregations are performed, this doesn't really matter. Depending on the object type and your chosen dimensions, QlikView may throw together all values and display them as if they belong together.

Best,
