Is it possible to connect to a database residing outside of QlikView using Direct discovery but with NO data in-memory?

I did give a read through some of the documents on Direct Discovery. but everywhere i could find it stating that a part of the data resides in-memory and the other in an external database and they can be connected (associatively) by the common fields.

What is the use of having SOME data in-memory?? And what data should be present in-memory ??

I am a beginner and any response would be greatly appreciated Thanks...!
