Is there a way to launch an external file but will still be able to retain the filters made from the previous application?

yes there is!

Set up a trigger to open your second QlikView document, and make sure to select the 'Transfer State' checkbox.

You'll need to ensure that the fields you want to transfer selections for are named the same as in the source document.

Thank you for the quick reply.  The problem i have here is that I'm using a button to launch the new application.  And the button doesn't have this transfer state check box in it.
