To make independent of selections and to show error if the selections are same in both objects

My problem is to get the data between two date range selections. For the selections i have used List Boxes instead of Calender.
I have two list boxes both comprises of same years[Let us assume 2009,2010]. And i mentioned one Object [LB01] fas FromYear and second one[LB02] as ToYear.
So, for the selection of FromYear it should not affect the selection in ToYear.
For that i applied alternate states. But still we can select the same year in both Objects.
So it should show an alert or error or something else when we select the same year in both the Objects,
