Stephen Few has written a really good book called "Information Dashboard design".  It is good and I would recommend you buy and read it.  It is an easy, yet informative, read.

If you do a web search for him you'll find his website, Perceptual Edge which has loads of good blog posts and White Papers on visualization design and best practice - all free - some quite heavy reading though.

He is not keen on pie charts and has positive aversion to anything 3D.

Dashboard design its not about attractiveness. Its about message delivery.

In addition to Stephen Few, I would recommend Dr. Hichert design rules.
