Link an input box to a field.

Rather than use a drop down list my user wants to be able to type in a value into an input box and then for the information in that box to filter the data on a particular field.

Your main purpose seems to only to filter data in the field basis the input value

If you are using V9.0 there is nothing better then the search object which can run a search on all the fields or on a single field
