count active records in date ranges

Hello,

Got some trouble trying to figure out how to calculate per month and year active records in some contracts.
records can be active within all kind of date ranges.
objectif is to create analytics around active records per month and year and comparisons between N and N-1 periods.

I've managed to calculate per month and year using an island calender as a dimension but this causes big performance issues.

suggestions?
