I'm not sure about "advanced charts". I have no experience with those.
In my opinion, the usefulness of a chart is always in the eyes of the user, which means you should adapt your charts to what the intended user knows and will be able to work with -> we have created a whole bundle of Apps for the company here (one for every team) and generally always stuck to combo-charts - with a few exceptions where we use donut_charts and other "simple" chart_types. I think, particularly when someone (top managers) shall be able to use all of the apps that you develop, then the look_and_feel of them should be somewhat similar which favorizes simple chart_types - that they will actually be able to read.
