I don't like the fact that new features are not part of enterprise license. For that reason, I have been building alerting module of my own (free of charge). To do so you need to send alerts from the ETL script but obviously you could build a separate script for that purpose and thereby manipulate how often alerts are sent instead of sending alerts only when your main app is reloaded. The downside on this solution is that each KPI measure has to be pre-calculated into the data model and therefore I loose certain flexibility of dynamic measure calculations based on selections and variables etc.
For others who are interested building alerting by themselves could follow these steps:
- Modify data model to include KPI's which you like to be alerted on
- Create separate database for alerts which should be enabled. You can also define the granularity and recipient information into those configurations.
- Build what ever logic into your script to filter only rows which exceed those pre-defined threshold limits that are enabled.
- Set up qlik web connector (SMTP) which will send notifications to email (this is free of charge). Note: in my environment the SMTP connector stopped working suddenly after 3 months, and Qlik Support refuses to fix the issue by claiming that the connector has disclaimers to work only in certain environments and not supporting reverse proxies for example... For this reason, I had to configure server side extension for sending emails instead of utilizing SMTP connector, but you may be more lucky in case the connector works in your environment.
- Create script connector which are pointing to your SMTP connector (or other module which sends the emails to recipients)
- Create separate qvd file or actual databse for logging emails which have been sent. I hashed the alert information and stored that into qvd. Later I can check if hash is found from the qvd or not, and prevent from re-sending same alert next time when app is reloaded.
- Extra: with different API's send alerts to other systems as well instead of only email alerting.
- Extra: Try to configure Q2G qlik app connector. I was not able to do so yet. This would enable more dynamic measure definitions since KPI's could be defined into app table object, which would be utilized as a data source of the alerting script (instead of loading data from the data model, which requires that all KPI's are pre-calculated into data model, which may be very complex for some KPI's).
Edit: I just got Q2G connector working which means that alerting can be set more dynamically instead of having to pre-calculate all KPI's into data model.
