Data With Emojis in Qlik Sense

CapaEmojis02.jpeg

Emojis are small images or icons used to express emotions, feelings and actions in text messages and online communication. They were created in Japan in the late 1990s and are now widely used around the world -e (絵 "picture"?) + moji (文字 "letter"?).

Emojis are used on many social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many others.

They are popular because they add an emotional dimension to text messages and help convey the tone or feeling that the sender wants to convey.

Emojis are also useful because they can often replace words or entire sentences. For example, when typing "I'm happy", you can simply send a smiley emoji. This saves time and can help make the conversation flow more smoothly.

Also, emojis are often used as a way to convey a sense of humor or to show that the sender is joking. In some cases, emojis are used as a language of their own, with their own meanings and nuances.

If emojis are a popular and useful way to add expression and emotion to text messages, why not do the same with data? They can be a powerful tool for visualizing and understanding data, as well as making our visualization dashboards more beautiful and enjoyable. Below we will present some ways to boost our visualization apps in Qlik Sense with Emojis . 🦾

A good practice is to use emojis to highlight information, present alerts or even visually determine the trend of information. Qlik Sense supports the use of emojis combined with text, giving a huge number of possibilities for its use.

The use of emojis has become so popular that they are standardized by the Unicode Consortium, the group responsible for standardizing the special characters used in operating systems (soon we should have changes in the collection of emojis that should arrive with Unicode 15.1 scheduled for the year 2023 - https ://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode15.1.0/). So whether you are a Windows, Mac or Linux user, you will have the emojis present in your operating system.

o include emojis in your data app use the following shortcuts on your keyboard:

Windows: Win key + . (point). The emoji keyboard will appear.

macOS: Control key + Command key + Space key (May depend on your model, keyboard and configuration. See System Preferences on your mac).

The simplest way to use emojis in Qlik Sense is to add them to object or page titles. See example below:

tela-emojis01.jpg

Note that in this case the title of the screen and the other objects have an emoji in the label:

To put the megaphone emoji in the folder title, edit the title expression and then type the expression you want:

='Hoje ' & Date(Today(),'DD/MM/YYYY') & ' (' & WeekDay(Today()) & ')'

Then position the cursor in the place where you want to place the emoji (in our case in front of the word Hoje) and use the shortcut key to view the emojis, as shown above.

The emoji keyboard will appear:

Then select the emoji you want, which in our case is the megaphone 📢 (hint: you can type the name of the desired emoji to find it faster) and it will look like this:

='📢 Hoje ' & Date(Today(),'DD/MM/YYYY') & ' (' & WeekDay(Today()) & ')'

Another way to use emoji is to signal a situation with data. In the example below, an arrow was added to the KPI label expression to show whether the current time value is greater (up arrow emoji) or less (down arrow emoji) than the previous hour value.

No exemplo a seguir, foi usado um KPI para alertar com emojis que um determinado valor encontra-se acima do limite permitido.

In the next example, an AI sentiment analysis was performed on Twitter posts and the emojis indicate with smiley faces whether the sentiment was Positive 😀, Neutral 😐 or Negative 🙁.

Then the emojis were used for an application related to hospitality industry indicators, where the classification of hotels (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stars) are represented by emojis.

An interesting option for using emojis in Qlik Sense is to signal important points in the data loading process, as in the following example.

You can still use emojis in Application Automation, Reports and other Qlik Sense functionality.
Finally, emojis bring a large number of possibilities for their use in your Qlik Sense applications. Did you like it? Share in the comments how you've been applying emojis in your Qlik Sense apps.
