How can I change the value of variable from Sense UI?

I have a variable defined which controls aspects of my Sense UI.  I would like to setup some type of UI control, such as a Filter Pane with Yes/No selections.  When I click Yes i'd like to set the variable to value A, No set the variable to value B.  Is this possible in Sense via what comes standard(no plugins).  Or is a plugin required?
