MonthStart(Max(Date)) behaves differently in dollar expansion and normal expression

When I use MonthStart(Max(Date)) as an expression I get expected result

However when I use it in a dollar expansion I get a weird result

I have selected "Date" for number formatting

Any help would be appreciated

How about Try $(=Num(MonthStart(Max(Date))))??
