Usage of "MTD Current Month" vs "Current Month"

What are the use cases where I should use MTD Current Month vs Current Month?

Looking at my data for the current month, MTD Current Month and Current Month return the same value. I'm guessing you would likely use Current Month in an expression to do something like budget vs actual to see if you're on track, but I'm not sure.
