I feel like a good data catalog and good metadata/lineage are so important to the mission of data democratization and really driving insights from data….. and it seems like a perpetual struggle to curate this stuff well. At a lot of companies, wiki is as good as it gets but we all can appreciate the shortcomings of wiki based documentation, and they are many.
We’re already using dbt, which we love and it’s great for the power users who feel comfy on command line, but we’re looking to add a data cataloging tool that would be able to be populated by us via API, but also be more dynamic/interactive for a wider audience (not just a static site) and have less barrier to entry/participation for those users in our analytics community who don’t push code or live and breathe SQL.
Metabase has my attention, and worked great for small project I did in the past, but I wasn’t convinced it could handle the volumes in an enterprise setting. I tried plugging it into our enterprise redshift data warehouse and it seemed to stall out… Anyone out there used Alation? Is it worth the money? What about Amundsen? Worth suffering the bleeding edge? What other tools are in the field?
How does your company handle data catalog, what works well and what setbacks have you experienced? . I would love to hear any recommendations, experiences, philosophies, etc.
