I wanted to know if there was an implementation plan for the Semantic Model. Creating a new layer feels like a rather large project and it would be nice if there was some guidance available on how to go about it systematically.
How much of our existing Qlik application metadata and master measures can the semantic model automatically reuse, and how much must we manually recreate?
If it's mostly manual, I'd want a demonstrated business benefit before agreeing to implement it.
Hi
Your concern is valid. A Semantic Model should not mean rebuilding years of existing Qlik application logic manually. Qlik has introduced a capability specifically to extract existing analytics application metadata and reuse it in governed data products.
There is now an implementation approach that can significantly reduce the effort of starting from scratch.
1. Can existing Qlik applications be reused?
Qlik introduced Extracting data products from analytics applications as a Public Preview capability in October 2026.
This is particularly relevant because it allows an existing Qlik analytics application to be extracted into a data product, including its corresponding semantic model.
The extraction carries forward:
Existing application data into new datasets.
Existing relationships from the application data model.
Master dimensions.
Master measures and their expressions.
This means you do not necessarily need to manually recreate all existing measures and dimensions.
