There is no formal documentation but approach you can take is
1. Evaluate your Webi or Crystal report to see what fields it is consuming.
2. Trace those fields back to universe layer tables.
3. once you have that information start building your QVD's based of the tables.
4. Then build a data model with those QVD's and build UI as per you requirements.
Steps 3 and 4 are not required but it's a good practice to keep them such for future scalability options.
