Qlik Sense Installation error - Enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'SenseDesktop.msi' in the box below.

Hi,

I successfully installed a previous iteration of Qlik Sense Desktop a few months ago but haven't used it very often. I've attempted to upgrade to the newest version as it seems as though mine was outdated. As such, I tried using the Add/Remove feature to uninstall Qlik, however it froze and the tray listing Qlik on the Add/Remove list of programs disappeared, yet Qlik remained on my computer. Manually I deleted all directories that I knew of containing Qlik settings/folders, etc. I didn't edit any registries, however.

Then I attempted to install the most current version.

It yielded the following error about halfway through the install:

In the box the default source they gave me was C:\Users\mburke\AppData\Local\Package Cache\{xxxxxx}v.1.1.1.0\ (where x is just a randomly generated string by the installer)

It's weird because I checked in that temp fodler (I assume created by the installer) and the .msi file is indeed not in there, instead it contains Qlik_Sense_Desktop_setup.exe and state.rsm ; however, in a separate file that is created temporarily (like \{xxxxxx} it is deleted after the install fails) C:\Users\mburke\AppData\Local\Package Cache\{yyyyyyy}v.1.1.1.0\ contains the SenseDesktop.msi that the error appears to be pointing to.

Even after pointing to the correct folder manually (changing the path from {xxxxx} to {yyyyy} and selecting the file i get the error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Matthew - I had the same issue. If you Run as Administrator, the setup (.exe) file should work fine and not generate the error.

Unfortunately, I tried that in my initial installs but unfortunately received the same error. The error log above is actually from a Run as Administrator error log.

After reading the log some more it looks as though perhaps there was something wrong with the installer when it tried to uninstall the prior version (because there is no version? or it found no version?) But why would that effect the current version's temporary MSI file.

For example:

Try this:

1.  Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Sense Desktop.

2.  Go to C:\Users\<your user profile>\AppData\Local\Programs\Qlik\Sense

3.  If there is a QlikSense.exe in this folder, rename to QlikSenseexe.old

4.  Go to C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Programs.  See if there is a Qlik folder, if so, go into that folder and see if there is a Sense folder.  As with item 3 above, if there is a QlikSense.exe in this folder, rename to QlikSenseexe.old

5.  Run the install for Sense 2.1.1 Desktop again.  It should now perform a full install vs an upgrade.

I know its 6 months late but I had the same problem today. When I first installed QlikSense Desktop it installed the .Net Framework 4.5.2 then issued a reboot of the machine.  I am logged into a corportate LAN where part of the users home drive folders, My Documents, Downloads etc,  are on the network, not local. But this had nothing to do with the problem after some investigation.

I cleared out C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\Package Cache - had no effect.

Trying several more times when it asks to locate the installation package SenseDesktop.msi during installation I hit Cancel. It then shows a pop-up with - The older version of Qlik Sense Desktop cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

So appears there was an old version on my machine.

Went into RegEdit (yes dangerous and needs admin rights) and under Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer  I found 2 GUID folders within

\Features and \Products. I deleted the GUID named folders (not the parent folders)

I then went back to the installation exe file and to my surprise as I was just about to give up - It worked!

It is now working. Hope this may help someone but its a bit risky to use Regedit to clean up old artefacts left behind by a previous install.
