dynamically select the dimensions of a pivot table

The end user requires a pivot table with around 10 dimensions in the rows and constantly changes the order in which they are shown.  Whereas, the option to expand and collapse the various levels is not 'user friendly' I am trying to create a method in which the end-user can dynamically select which combination of dimensions they wish to see. I am currently attempting to do this using variable input buttons (one for show, one for hide)  for each individual dimension  (making for a lot of buttons on the sheet), while this seems to work I am hoping that there may be a more elegant approach to solve this issue and I was interested in knowing if maybe someone can offer a better solution. For instance, is it possible to use a single variable to list several dimensions that would be depicted in the pivot table?

There's also assorted third-party extensions that take on this task, such as Custom Report (from Vizlib), but in your case it sounds like the basic version you can create yourself using native functionality should be good enough.

Since it looks like people are still finding this post, I'd like to add that the new Straight Table object included in Enterprise as of May 2023 allows fairly easy ad-hoc table creation. As of this writing, there's no Pivot Table version yet, but we're expecting one sometime in 2024.
