Reload Fails With Error Message "[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] Protocol error in TDS stream"

Reload in QlikView or Qlik Sense failed with the error: 

[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] Protocol error in TDS stream

The error also occurs if the same SQL query is executed from another application (for example Microsoft Excel) with the same database drivers and user credentials. 

Environment:

Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows 
QlikView 

This is not a Qlik software problem, but rather a communication (protocol) issues between the ODBC driver and the database.

Commonly the issue is caused by issues with the database driver used by the ODBC connection or by the network card drivers. 
 

Resolution:

There are three possible actions to take in order to address the issue:

1. Update ODBC driver to a later version
2. Update network card driver to a later version
3. Switch from ODBC connection to OLEDB connection
