Why is AEM version specific

We're using Attunity to move data in from various data sources, and have two attunity servers. Due to project timelines, we're currently using two different versions of Attunity. What is it that requires AEM to match the version exactly. This seems very limiting
We have 5.2, as well as 6.4

When AEM was originally introduced it was designed for monitoring of Replicate tasks only.
The Designer mode and Analytics where introduced only starting Replicate 5.5. There also close hand shake between information transferred between AEM and replicate.
For them to work together, you must follow the compatibility matrix.
