Is there any other way to stop shared file size from growing? Is the Power Tools the best solution to remove objects to reduce size?

No and Yes.
In addition to Terrys answer you could also restrict permissions on server to stop users from creating objects. This should at least slow down the process. Depending on what type of objects you could also lift some of them into the original .qvw.
