Connecting Azure SQL DB using Azure AD Service Principal.

Hello Support Team,

I hope you are doing well.

We would like to connect to Azure SQL Database using an Azure Active Directory Service Principal.

After reviewing your documentation, we found the following descriptions:

▼ Username
In the Username field, enter your user name for accessing the database.
When Azure Active Directory Service Principal is selected, this is the Client ID.

▼ Password
In the Password field, enter your password for accessing the database.
When Azure Active Directory Service Principal is selected, this is the Secret Key.
https://help.qlik.com/en-US/replicate/November2024/Content/Replicate/Main/Microsoft%20Azure%20SQL%20...

※We understand that the Secret Key refers to the Value of the Client Secret.
Please let us know if this understanding is incorrect.

However, according to Microsoft’s documentation, the use of Client Secrets is not recommended for production environments, as stated below:

Client secrets are less secure than certificate or federated credentials and therefore should not be used in production environments.
While they may be convenient for local app development, it’s imperative to use certificate or federated credentials for any applications running in production to ensure higher security.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity-platform/how-to-add-credentials?tabs=client-secret

Based on this,is our understanding correct that although Microsoft does not recommend Client Secret–based authentication, Qlik Replicate currently supports authentication using an Azure Active Directory Service Principal only via Client Secrets?

Additionally, if there are any other required settings or prerequisites when using an Azure Active Directory Service Principal, we would appreciate your guidance.

Best Regards.

Hi @iti-attunity-sup

Thanks for your question in Qlik Community. I do not have a definite answer but wanted to share that I checked documentation for version 2025.5 and 2025.11 as it appears that you are using version 2024.11 - and the configuration for those later versions also mentions using Client Secrets. Based on this it suggests that certificate or federated credentials may not be supported yet. I am not sure if changes to this are on the product roadmap, but the best way to ensure that is to submit a feature request. I encourage you to please submit a feature request at this link which goes directly to our Product Management team. Other users will have the opportunity to vote on it to increase the chances at adoption and to set the priority: https://community.qlik.com/t5/Ideas/idb-p/qlik-ideas

If another representative cannot answer this question here with more certainty, you might also consider opening a support case so we can check with our internal support team. We don't have a way to elevate issues to them directly from Qlik Community. In general though, if another authentication option was available it would be included in our documentation.

On your second question, all the requirements & prerequisites should be in the User Guide. Please advise if you have any other specific questions or doubts. If you would like more specific guidance for your use case or a walkthrough of setting up the endpoint, you do have the option of engaging our Professional Services team (fee based). More information on when that is most appropriate is here: How and when to contact Qlik's Professional Servic... - Qlik Community - 1714936
