Adding a new column to a table in a script

I am trying to add a new editable column in my script. This column will allow me to enter information which would have been validated , sort of the data validation option in excel.  Ultimately, I want to classify my user "types" based on this information .

I saw the "inputfield" option but it seems to only work with numbers but I need to enter these as text.

Please advise.

Sorry I do not have anything better, but hopefully you may be able to find something there that may give you some ideas on how to go about this one.
