Alternate State Not Working In Straight Table

I have simple calculation in a expression, and it is unable to take the  alternate state condition  in a straight table. The  dashboard  has  triggers would that be a  cause.  I have created the alternate state because the user  wants to  swap between 2 periods.

Expression   :      

sum(   {<$(P2 state)>} cost* qty)
