Future of QlikView Developer 5-10 years down the line.

Hi everyone,

Greetings of the day.

I recently completed my Masters and have been really interested in QlikView. Finally after a lot of struggle I have got a start In QlikView as a developer. And I am liking the tool as well. But recently i've come across some news of QlikSense and QlikNext.

Well i do understand what QlikSense, but the news of QlikNext and the fact/rumour that QlikView will be phased out in the coming years(I've heard 3 years).

My question is with QlikSense coming in which will reduce the work to Data Modelling and a few more things and with QlikNext taking over from QlikView, what will be the role of QlikView Developers in the coming years. What do we expect, more doors opening for us, or already opened doors shutting.

I'd like your views on whats coming ahead.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Muntazir,

Christmas wishes to you.

Congratulations on completing your Masters. I admire that you're thinking all this before getting into something. Having this mindset to question always helps and that's a good skill. Let me try to give my views and these are my personal views:

It's not the question about whether QlikView keeps you in job and/or Qlik Sense takes the developers' role away. It's the question about how do you embrace the change? Yes, In QlikView you design and develop applications for the users but in Qlik Sense you do other things as a developer which are equally important if not more. There is stiff competition in the market and other big vendors like IBM, Microsoft, SAP and SalesForce are already throwing their hats into BI space, especially In-Memory and self service BI arena. Going back to your question - it's not about the future of QlikView or Qlik Sense developer rather you need to reconsider your question with other tools in the market. Instead, you should look at the new opportunities which Qlik Sense is presenting and there are some exciting learning opportunities. Qlik made wise decision to build Qlik Sense from ground up instead of forcing QlikView to work as Qlik Sense.

QlikView developers come from different backgrounds & skills. Generally speaking, we can divide QlikView developers into two categories: Organic & Tailor-made.Organic QlikView developers come from one of the streams – Traditional BI/ETL Developer, Database Developer, Data Analyst, Excel Developer, Web Developer, Test Analyst, Business Analyst and a DBA. Coming from one of these streams have both advantages and dis-advantages in Qlik world. Tailor-made QlikView developers are budding new developers (like you) who start with QlikView or developers who move to QlikView from non-IT background. Generally, these developers are fresh graduates or first timers who approach QlikView with great enthusiasm & passion.

With Qlik Sense path, the role of traditional QlikView developer will change and you need don't to develop visualization for the users. However, you need to create work on complex data models to create most flexible data model. At the same time, you need to manage the user repository and you will be the custodian of the data. Your role as Qlik Sense developer will be more challenging because you need to embrace API(s) to create mashups and custom visualization. This means you also need to know at least some web development skills like HTML, CSS and the main one is JavaScript. I'm sure all this still keeps the developers on job who embrace the change and learn new technologies!

I hope this helps!

Cheers - DV

Hi Deepak,

Christmas Greetings to you too.

Thanks for your views. In terms of Product i agree that its a good move by Qlik to introduce QlikSense to keep up with the ever changing BI scenario and give the customers more freedom with their data. And so does QlikNext appear to be breaking new grounds. As a fresher without much knowledge of the industry i was curious about the change it will bring in the Developer profile.

I am glad you threw light on how QlikSense will impact the work profile and i was looking for views on similar lines. Well more than the fear i was curious to know how it will shape things ahead.

Technology is an ever changing phenomenon but it never hurts to know whats coming ahead... 🙂

Thanks for your precious time and insights.

Would like to hear more such views....(I'm greedy in this regards... 😉  )
