I don´t think there´s really a limit. In my experience you rather get a timeout at your source system (e.g. sap bw etc.). In a project with over a billion datasets i had to slice my qvd into one qvd per year or country, but that was just because of a timout of the source system. If your QV server has enough power you create an more or less unlimited qvd, i guess.
