Recommended Developer Hardware

Hey all! I'm wondering what folks are using for developer desktop machines. (32/64-bit OS, what processor, how much RAM, etc.) We're running XP on Core 2 Duo machines with 2 GB of RAM and noticing some lag when we're doing QV work. We've occasionally run into virtual memory errors as well. (I've increased our swap space, which seems to help.) We'd like to move to a 64-bit OS with plenty of RAM, but only if it's going to provide a noticeable improvement.

Thanks in advance,

~Mark

Yes, 64bit will help prevent object out of memory issues. I'd go with an i5 or i7 6-8 gigs of ram.;

Not needed, but will help with performance. Also make sure you dont' have any synythetic key's or unused data/fields being loaded that you are not using.

I'm running Windows XP on a 32 bit machine with 2GB of RAM and two 2.13GHz CPUs. Other people around here on on similar machines. For applications with higher memory requirements, we share another machine that we remote control - Windows Vista, 64 bit, 4GB RAM, one 2.3 GHz CPU. So none of the machines we develop on are particularly beefy. We'll add RAM to the 64-bit machine when necessary, but so far everything fits in 4GB when coded properly. Our largest tables are in the tens of millions, though, so nothing particularly big.

So far, we've done OK sharing the 64-bit machine, with only occasional conflicts when two people need it at the same time. Then we just have to decide which project is higher priority. We're not a particularly big shop, but a shared 64-bit machine might work for you too if you only have a few developers, rather than upgrading everyone's machines and QlikView licenses.
