Set maximum of a field as Variable

Hi there, i wonder if we can set the value of a variable using an existing field in table.

What i'm trying to do is to affect to the variable LastDownload the max value of the field DTINSERTED which is in a resident table.

I try : LET LastDownload = max(DTINSERTED)

Without any sucess.

Apologize for this question which could appear really simple for some.
