Sign into a webpage

Hi,

does someone know, how to handover login-credentials for a webpage into the URL?

The usual way would be to use http:\\user:password@website. This works unless the username contains some "illegal" characters, in my case the username is an email-address containing the "@".

Is there another way to either mask it or to hand over in a different way?
