Slow performance of SetContent macro command in QlikView 12.10 SR 9

We have migrated from QlikView 11.2 SR 15 to QlikView 12.10 SR 9. We use macros and assign values to variables using the

"ActiveDocument.Variables(<theVar>).SetContent <theValue>, true" command.

Now in QlikView 12.10 SR 9 our application is much slower for the end user. It turns out that execution of the SetContent command above takes up to half a second in 12.10, but only a few miliseconds in 11.2.

Problem seems to be in the qvw file and not in the plugin. If we save a 11.2 qvw in 12.10, then performance decreases.

What is the issue here and how can performance be improved in 12.10?
