Morning All,
Please can someone explain this one for me. I have a pivot table, and the first column shown here in the picture has the expression =AVG(BudgUC) . Now granted I have show partial sums ticked and on, but why is this total at the basic level not right? Surely it should be 14.38 not 16.53??? HELP!!!!
Kind Regards,
Miles
Hi,
Try to change this to Average.

I would love to do that, however my total mode is greyed out...
I've even put the following into an expression:
=
avg({$<[MR12 Category] = {'*.*'}>} TotalB)
And that matches the table total of 16.53, but why doesn't the table match itself? There are three levels to the pivot, could that be something to do with it maybe? And it's me looking at an average of an average?
Ok chaps, I think I might have worked this out all by myself. Has anyone heard of Simpson's Paradox? Well if you are doing averages of different groups of data and counting them by a non common denominator, (ie the size of the first group is 10, but the size of the second group could be 12), then watch out...the average of those groups will not be the true average! Have a look at this article, very interesting!!! http://lemire.me/blog/archives/2005/10/28/average-of-averages-is-not-the-average/
