Does qlikview 12 use the GPU processing power?

Hello,

I'm considering a new laptop and I wondered if I should get a dGPU.

Does Qlikview use the processing power of the dedicated GPU?

I really wish it did. It would help me if it could use my NVidia card.

Maybe someone from Qlik can shed some light on this?  If it has been considered or not.

Yes and no,

On the server it is the responsability of the browser to decide if it can use the Graphic Capabilities of your GPU. A GPU is hardware specific and it depends on the OS how that is implemented.

If you for example create an extension with WebGL you are using the powers of the GPU.

Can you elaborate what you mean by "using the powers of the GPU"?

If you create an extension with css, you might use animation which uses the powers of the GPU.

Let me know if this is enough. I have material that explains this, but this is outside the scope of the question.

For analytical purposes it is not using the GPU to gain additional horsepower. Compute time will not be speedier due to a powerful GGPU card. QlikView or Qlik Sense does not take advantage of NVidia CUDA nor the OpenCL possibilites to compute anything. But of couse the graphics card is used as normal for rendering graphics.

The graphical demand of QlikView is relatively light and considering the current state of technology, it shouldn't stretch any inbuilt graphics chip.

If you are thinking of QlikView offloading some processing to the GPU, I doubt it. To do that, the application needs to be specifically written to take advantage of it. Considering the environment that QlikView works on (work computer and servers), I doubt the extra effort would make it worthwhile for Qlik to implement such a feature.

But to give you another point of consideration, you could benefit from a dedicated GPU if it has its own VRAM. As you know, for QlikView, the more memory the better, and having to share memory with your graphics card is not ideal. But then, for work machines this is normally negligible, what is 64MB in 4GB 😉

So, regarding to a dedicated GPU, think of what else you would be doing on your laptop and if it could benefit.
