File Functions Meta Tags from Office?

I am trying to read Meta Tags from MS office and pdf documents. I know this is possible with other file formats such as .jpg, .wmv, .wma and .mp3

but is it possible collect this information from say .doc and .pdf formats? If so how and what attributes can I collect?
