Qlik Reporting – Difficulty locating deleted objects in templates (REPTPL / REP‑500109)

I’ve been troubleshooting a Qlik Reporting template issue for the past 2–3 days, and I’m hoping I’m missing an important technique rather than this being expected behavior.

Context

  • I made a large update to several sheet objects
  • I was careful not to intentionally delete anything referenced in my reporting templates
  • After the update, report generation failed with an error stating that an object (ID like pWxxxx) used in the template had been deleted

At this point I ran into a number of problems that made recovery extremely difficult.

Main issues

  1. No way to locate the object

    • The error message does not indicate:
      • which sheet the object belongs to
      • what type of object it was (KPI, chart, filter, etc.)
      • where it is used in the template
    • Since the object is already deleted, searching by Object ID in the app is not possible
  2. Templates with many objects are very hard to troubleshoot

    • This template has 100+ objects
    • There is no way I can see to:
      • jump to a referenced object
      • highlight its usage
      • see dependencies in the template
  3. Deleting and re‑adding objects is extremely tedious

    • No multi‑select when adding objects to the template image library
    • Each object requires:
      • developer mode
      • copy Object ID
      • manual add + wait cycles
    • Rebuilding an entire template feels disproportionate to a single accidental issue
  4. Object deletion deadlock

    • After identifying the deleted object via an older app copy and attempting to clean up the template:
      • Qlik claims the object cannot be deleted because it’s still used somewhere
      • But provides no information on where it’s used
  5. Binding indicator confusion

    • I attempted to use the binding feature (logo with cylinder)
    • All objects remain orange and never turn green/red
    • Is this feature functioning as intended?

Questions to the community / Qlik team

  1. Is there a reliable way to locate an object in a reporting template using only its Object ID?
  2. Are there best practices to avoid this situation when making sheet changes?
  3. Is there tooling planned (or already available) to:
    • automatically remove template references when an object is deleted
    • or at least point to the exact template location causing the error?
  4. Is rebuilding the template really the only supported recovery path in this scenario?
