PostGreSQL 9.6

Hi experts

We intend to upgrade our QlikSense from August 2022 Patch 2 to November 2024 Patch 12.

I have read this article: https://help.qlik.com/en-US/sense-admin/November2024/Subsystems/DeployAdministerQSE/Content/Sense_De...

Is there a real need to upgrade also PostgreSQL from 9.6 to 12.5? Do I have to do this prior or can this happen after the Qlik upgrade? I thought Qlik will automatically upgrade also the PostgreSQL Version.

Thank you, Tom

Hi @TomBond77 ,

you should actually upgrade to 14.8.
And yes, it is a requirement: "If you have PostgreSQL 9.6 installed locally when you upgrade Qlik Sense, you will not be able to proceed with the upgrade until you have upgraded the PostgreSQL database to a newer version."
Upgrading Qlik Sense with 12.5 will be possible, but it will result in a warning, since the latest version requires 14.8 in order to be fully supported.

Previously, we would upgrade the database automatically, as you mentioned, but that has not been the case for sometime, because of security reasons and other concerns from customers.
The Qlik PostgreSQL Installer simplifies the upgrade process, making it easy for most customers.

Is the uninstall via the control panel failing?

You can search for Qlik_Sense_update.exe in C:\ProgramData\Package Cache and all its subfolders. The one with the latest date will be the one you need.
If you cannot find it, you will need to temporary install Qlik Sense and the Patch on another machine, and then get the installer from there.

Hi @TomBond77 ,

yes. basically everything that is about installing/uninstalling requires the services to be stopped to prevent problems.

Thank you, but in the link given above Qlik says:

"PostgreSQL 9.6 is not supported when upgrading. However, if you have PostgreSQL 9.6 installed locally when you upgrade Qlik Sense, it will still be used after the upgrade, even if it is no longer supported."

I think it will continue to work.

Am I right?

Thanks, Tom

Okay, I think you are right. I will have to upgrade from 9.6 to the higher version, as mentioned here: https://help.qlik.com/en-US/sense-admin/November2024/Subsystems/DeployAdministerQSE/Content/Sense_De...

Under "Considerations" it is said that there are two ways to upgrade PostgreSQL 9.6 to 14.8:

  • Using the QPI on a patched Qlik Sense version might lead to unexpected issues. If you have a patch installed, follow these steps:

    1. Uninstall all patches for your current Qlik Sense version (for example, revert Feb 2022 Patch X to Feb 2022 IR).

    2. Use QPI to upgrade the PostgreSQL database.

    3. Finally, upgrade Qlik Sense to your desired version.

    Alternatively:

    1. Upgrade Qlik Sense to an IR (initial release) of a later version that supports QPI.

    2. Use QPI to upgrade the PostgreSQL database.

That means, I can upgrade first from August 2022 Patch 2 to November 2024 IR and thereafter run the QPI, am I right?

Thanks for your valuable help! Thomas

Hi @TomBond77 ,

the alternative option is only if you have 12.5.
You won't be able to upgrade to November 2024 IR, if you have 9.6.

The part in the link above that says " However, if you have PostgreSQL 9.6 installed locally when you upgrade Qlik Sense, it will still be used after the upgrade, even if it is no longer supported." only concerns August 2022 to May 2023.

From August 2023 on you'll need to consider the part about "Qlik SenseAugust 2023 and later", which explicitly states "If you have PostgreSQL 9.6 installed locally when you upgrade Qlik Sense, you will not be able to proceed with the upgrade until you have upgraded the PostgreSQL database to a newer version."

I hope this clarifies it.

Many thanks Daniele

Then I have one more last questions.

We have installed August 2022 Patch 2. It is said: "Uninstall all patches for your current Qlik Sense version (for example, revert Feb 2022 Patch X to Feb 2022 IR)"

How do I uninstall Patch 2? Sorry, I have never uninstalled a Qlik patch.

Thank you again, Tom

Thanks, how do I locate the update package? I can only see many GUIDs, but how do you locate the right one if there is no text displayed?

Locate the Qlik_Sense_update.exe installer package in C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\[guid]\.

Hi Daniele

I have one more question to task no. 17 of this blog: https://community.qlik.com/t5/Official-Support-Articles/Upgrading-and-unbundling-the-Qlik-Sense-Repo...

If we are going to upgrade Qlik immediately thereafter to November 2024 do we have to stop all services, also the Repository Database service?

Thank you, Tom
