How is Session Module API different from Authentication API?

I see these two links:

And only the "SessionModule API" has a definition.  Authentication API only has a flow description.

Q) What's the difference?  How is "Session Module API" different from "Authentication API"?

My company aims to achieve API Session Solution described here with Qlik Sense 2.1.1.0.  And, we're trying to attempt it with the SessionModule API.
