data set "profile refresh" through API

Hi,

I have noticed that my data sets benefit from me pressing the reload button that refreshes the profile in it. I am not sure what it actually does more than things work better afterwards. 
Included as picture is the button.
When do I actually need to do this? Is it when a table gets new attributes or values?

And finally how do I do the refresh with an API call?

I found the reloads API calls which seems to do what I asked for.
