Outdated, out of support versions of Microsoft SQL Server and Qlik Cloud Analytics

Qlik Cloud (Qlik Sense) is incompatible with outdated and non-supported versions of Microsoft SQL Server and cannot utilize them as a data source.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and earlier are not supported by Microsoft (see SQL Server lifecycle dates). If you are unclear which version of SQL Server you have, use one of the methods described in this Microsoft article.

The Qlik Cloud Analytics connector for Microsoft SQL Server officially supports versions 2014 through 2019

To continue using the Microsoft SQL Server connector in Qlik Cloud Analytics you must ensure that your environment is on a supported Microsoft SQL Server version within a supported version of the operating system. For reference and details, review the Microsoft online documentation pages on how to upgrade SQL Server.

You also have the option to move your on-premises Microsoft SQL Server to Azure SQL Database. This cloud version uses the same database engine, which is continuously improved and upgraded in Microsoft Azure. Qlik Cloud Analytics already has a dedicated connector for Azure SQL Database.

This issue with older versions of Microsoft SQL Server is an excellent example of why Qlik recommends that sources being accessed by Qlik Cloud Analytics are kept up-to-date. Using a recent version enables you to:

  • Protect your data with the latest security updates.  Not just within the database, but also in the protocols used in the data connection to external platforms
  • Take advantage of new capabilities and new features, as well as general improvements like performance
  • Proactively ensure compatibility with other environments and platforms when they get updated

If you are affected by this change or have any questions, please contact our Qlik Support representatives through chat.

Hello @TLX-QlikView

Can you confirm what version of Windows the SQL server is hosted on?

All the best,
Sonja

Thank you for the feedback, @TLX-QlikView

We've recently become aware of compatibility issues caused by Windows 2012 R2 or earlier servers.

Several customers successfully update their Windows 2012 R2 server to Windows 2016 or higher, resulting in the issue being resolved. If you cannot update your Windows OS where SQL server is installed, it is suggested to use Qlik Data Transfer as an interim measure until a Windows upgrade can be performed on your Windows 2012 R2 server. Or, if possible, stand up a second temporary MSQL server on a Windows 2016 or higher server and then migrate a copy of your database(s) therein.

See:

Installing Qlik Data Transfer | Qlik Support YouTube Channel
Uploading on-premises data with Qlik DataTransfer

Please note that Microsoft (and in turn Qlik) are not going to be supporting Windows 2012 beyond Oct. 12, 2023 when it reaches 'end of life'. See Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 reaching end of support.

If your organization is running Windows 2012 R2 or earlier, we recommend upgrading to Windows Server 2016 or higher versions as soon as possible. Doing so will maintain a supported platform beyond Oct. 12, 2023 but also expect to resolve the the SQL connector error encountered.

We are still investigating and will update our article and documentation as soon as possible.

All the best,
Sonja

Hello @TLX-QlikView

My original reply was to the original message in which you had mentioned only a Windows 2012 R2 instance. It applies to this.

For the Windows Server 2019 Datacenter, let me contact our subject matter experts.

All the best,
Sonja

Hello once again,  @TLX-QlikView

Regarding the Windows 2019 server: we'd need a support ticket to investigate this. When logging the ticket, please include your cipher and TLS protocol settings as per Exporting Template with IISCrypto. This will help us replicate the settings you have.

All the best,
Sonja

Hi

Thanks for the update.

We are using Qlik Sense SaaS, how does Qlik Data Transfer work with it.

The link shows Data Transfer installation for Desktop vresion?

thanks

Hello @TLX-QlikView

Qlik Data Transfer is meant for Qlik Cloud / Qlik Sense SaaS use. Qlik DataTransfer uploads data from on-premises data sources to Qlik Cloud. Qlik DataTransfer can provide access to on-premise data sources that are otherwise unavailable to Qlik Sense SaaS. Qlik DataTransfer also can upload data from Qlik Sense Desktop and Qlik Sense Enterprise on Windows apps to Qlik Sense SaaS.

As Qlik Data Transfer is not affected by the adjustments made, it can be used as a workaround for the time being. It is not meant to replace an upgrade to supported environments.

All the best,
Sonja

Hi

Reg. Windows 2019 , we were able to connect to the SQL Server Connector. No issues with it.

For Windows 2012 Server, i will try out the Data transfer option and update the results here.

Thanks

Thank you for confirming the Windows 2019 server was able to connect. Did it require any intervention from your end? (reconfiguration, etc)

All the best,
Sonja
