Doc Cals and Session Cals

I have a question regarding how Document Cals and session Cals can be used.

Right now we have 10 session cals and 20 document cals.

If i assign a user a document cal to a certain document will they be able to acess other docuements if a session cal is available or is that user that is assigned that document cal restricted to only that document cal ?

Also if the Allow dynamic cal assignment box is checked does that just assigned cals to users when they use it.

For example if no one is assigned a document cal but there are 10 available for that document and user A goes to that page will they now be assigned that document cal forever or will it be available for another user to use it after user A is done ?

I wrote a blog post a while back about Session CALs, this may be of interest?

https://www.quickintelligence.co.uk/qlikview-session-cals-2/

If a user has a Document CAL (or many Document CALs) that does not stop them using a Session CAL.

With Allow Dynamic selected that Document CAL will be given to any user who does not have a Named CAL and has access to that document.

That Document CAL then stays with that user until it is manually de-allocated. We have an app that looks at CAL usage on our clients servers and identifies when a CAL has not been used in 30 days and also when a user has more than 3 Document CALs (the point at which it is more economical to use a Named CAL).

Hope that helps.

Document cal is specific to a single document for the assigned user. Once assigned it cannot be shared.

Only session cals are shared. which is why doc cals or named user cals are much cheaper than session cals.

You've already received very valuable information from the previous two replies which should answer your questions, but I'll try to go into some more detail on them:

If i assign a user a document cal to a certain document will they be able to acess other docuements if a session cal is available or is that user that is assigned that document cal restricted to only that document cal ?

They are able to access other documents when a Session CAL is available.

Example:

Let's assume you have Document 1, 2, and 3.

User A is allowed to see all three of them. User A has only received a Document CAL for Document 1 though.

User A will now be able to open Document 1 at any time, but to be able to open 2 and 3, a Session CAL needs to be currently available for use. Otherwise, they will get an error message mentioning the server doesn't currently have a CAL available for them.

Also if the Allow dynamic cal assignment box is checked does that just assigned cals to users when they use it.

If you assign a pool of Document CALs to a document, they will be passed out to the users. First come, first served.  Session CALs will be ignored until all Document CALs from the pool have been allocated.

For example if no one is assigned a document cal but there are 10 available for that document and user A goes to that page will they now be assigned that document cal forever or will it be available for another user to use it after user A is done ?

Document CALs are not released automatically, so this CAL will now be bound to that user until it is manually unassigned, and the quarantine period (7 days in the current releases), has expired.  Unassignment should only happen within the agreed license conditions. See the previous links given by the other posters.

Only Session and Usage CALs are automatically renewed based on their quarantine period.
