Service Release Upgrade (8.5) -> 8.5 SR6, best practices ?!

We plan to install the newest Service Release (SR6) of our current Major Release (8.5) in our production environment.

As far I have been informed, I'll have to uninstall the existing installtion and reinstall wih the newest installer files?

1.) Is that true? (That's what I usually only acceptable for a Major Release change but not a Service Release upgrade!)

However, by uninstalling and installing we might loose our configuration, remember it is a production system, and the upgrade should be done overnight and the system should be up and running again thereafter.

2.) So, what is the your best practice to upgrade?

3.) Especially, which folders / registry keys need to be backed up to be abe to do a complete and simple "Roll Back", if the upgrade failes.

Or have I been misinformed anyways and I can just run the newest installer and upgrade my existing Service Release?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to your postings !
