There is animation in QV. Add time (date, month) as first dimension to you pie chart, click "Animate..." button in chart properties, and check "Animate first dimension". As for the other options - try and see what fits you most.
I am able to animate a bar chart in the way you mentioned, but when I open the properties of a pie chart, the animate button is not available. Is there something I am missing?
