Is it possible to use colormix on a dimension rather than an expression in a chart?

I would like the bars to be different shades of one colour based on the dimension not the result of the expression.

Yes, that's possible. Click on the + in front of the dimension on the Dimension tab of the properties window of the chart. Then click the option Background Color. Next click on the Edit button to open the expression editor. There you can choose the Colormix Wizard from the File menu or enter the expression manually.
