Customizing symbols in scatterplot - using images

I would like to customize the scatterplot so that I can change the symbol to display an image asset. I'd like also like to be able to select one of several different images based on an expression... is this possible without an extension?

A simple example would be an up arrow or down arrow based on whether a metric is increasing/decreasing.

I think you need an extension in order to use a custom symbol in a scatter chart...
