Hi,

Dashboards can look very different, depending largely on

- what your management wants them to look like

- who will be using them

=> They can be made up of many different types of charts and show a lot of diffferent information in one place or they can be made up of n sheets, with just one figure on one sheet, largely restricted to barcharts - depending on the users who will have to work with the info.

I am not aware of any general rules and guidelines for this. There certainly are "best practice" guides for data_modeling and for visualizations - but I wouldn't bother too much with those unless you're really free to design the dashboards yourself the way you think best.

I would start with Stephen's Few book "Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data" - it is considered to be one of the best guides and has great examples of dashboards. Stephen does a great job explaining different techniques and why, for example, you would choose bar chart vs. line chart and for what purpose.

This is a classical book also "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information"  by Edward R. Tufte.

Then there are quite a few data visualization blogs that has wealth of information - just goggle "data visualization blogs".
