Special Characters (umlaut) replaced by "?"

When I tried to load excel files, special characters such as umlauts are sometimes replaced by "?", but sometimes they will load as is. How can I make sure they get loaded correctly?

Maybe use different type of charset like ISO 8859-1 or UTF-8
