With my clients I always tend to steer them away from the term KPI until they are a good way up the Bi maturity curve. I start them off with basic measures, then targetted measures, before starting to use the term KPI.
Think of a KPI as a simple piece of information that explains the current position and trend of an aspect of an organisation. Simple KPI's can be things like 'Net Profit %', but you can get hideously comvoluted ones like 'Median Process Cycle Times' across business with global divisions and thousands of processes.
